MBC under fire for "workplace bullying" after weather caster is discovered dead, 17-page suicide note leaked

MBC is under fire for workplace bullying. 

On the 27th, Maeil Shinmun reported that they have secured a 17-page manuscript and suicide note totaling 2,750 characters on weather caster Oh Yo-anna's cellphone after password was unlocked. 

According to the report, the suicide note contained details of being bullied in the workplace by two specific weathercasters. Oh Yo-anna, who became an MBC freelance weathercaster in May 2021, became a target of bullying in March of the following year. A fellow weathercaster who joined the company first made a false report and blamed it on Oh Yo-anna, while another colleague shocked viewers by criticizing her for asking her to correct incorrect weather information, saying, "How dare a junior point this out to a senior?"

Regarding the allegations, MBC stated, "One thing that can be clearly confirmed is that the deceased never reported her grievances to the department in charge (Human Resources Team, Management Support Department, Human Resources Counseling Office, Audit Department, Clean Center) or the managers she worked with while working as a freelancer. If the deceased had officially reported the grievances (workplace bullying, etc.) to the company at the time, or if she had informed the responsible managers of the damage done to her even a little, the company would have naturally conducted an appropriate investigation."

"MBC deals with workplace bullying extremely harshly and we begin investigations without delay when reports are received from freelancers, cast members, or when requests for consultation are mad. If the bereaved family requests confirmation of the facts based on the newly discovered 'suicide note', MBC is ready to begin an investigation as soon as possible. We have not heard of any bullying at MBC."

Meanwhile, the bereaved family has filed a civil suit against her coworkers based on conversations between Yo-anna and her colleagues when she was alive and katalk messages found. A replay episode 170 of 'You Quiz the Block' where she appeared has also been taken down on all 3 major broadcasters including OTT platform tvN's Tving's homepage, YouTube, and Naver TV. This particular episode featured weathercasters Bae Hye-ji, Nam Yu-jin, professor Kim Boong-nyeon, and actor Son Seok-gu.

Attention is being paid as to whether MBC's investigation will clear up suspicions of workplace bullying at the company.
